Our History

Beginning an Alliance

A new North American affiliation for Mennonite congregations came into being when church leaders signed a charter document in the Paradise Mennonite Church, September 28, 2002, to form The Alliance of Mennonite Evangelical Congregations.

A Splintering or a Strengthening?

Mennonites have had a reputation for dividing. It requires a catalog to list all the bodies and branches that consider themselves to be Mennonites or one kind or another. Groups seem to have splintered over what sometimes appears to be insignificant or trivial matters.

Becoming a New Branch of the Vine

Shared concerns over a number of years led to a major consultation held at Smoketown, Pennsylvania, July 10-11, 1979 in which twenty Mennonite leaders discussed, among other matters, the neglect of the evangelical dimensions of our Mennonite heritage.

Our Experiences

Our partner congregations include churches that have had previous and in many cases, long historical affiliations with several conferences including Lancaster Conference, Franconia Conference, Atlantic Coast Conference and the Eastern District Conference as well as others. The heritage and helpfulness of these historic associations are treasured and deeply appreciated.
